Kenmare- The Stanley Blue Jays led wire to wire in their 59-34 win over the Kenmare Honkers in the District 16 Championship game.
Stanley picked a great time to play one of their best games of the season. The Blue Jays played smothering team defense, making it impossible for the Honkers to get any type of offensive rhythm going. Stanley held Kenmare to 11 first half points, taking a 17 point lead into halftime.
Sophomore Abby Iverson added 30 points in this game to lead all scorers, she put an exclamation point on an excellent tournament with a highlight reel basket in the fourth quarter. Iverson went behind her back while splitting two defenders en-route to an acrobatic lay in.
Iverson was the prime beneficiary of some very nifty passing by the rest of the Blue Jays. Senior Maddie Meiers played two of her best games of the season in the district tournament. Meiers dished out a handful of slick assists and added 13 points of her own, she also went a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line.
The Blue Jays made some nice offensive plays in this game but it was really the team defense that allowed them to separate from the Honkers. Lacey Meiers, Maddie Meiers, Megan Mills, Kelsey Colbenson, Caitlyn Enger, and Abby Iverson banded together to put on one of their best defensive performances of the season.
The Blue Jays advance to the Region 8 tournament with the win, we will have a full bracket on Tuesday following the completion of the District 15 tournament.
The Blue Jays improve to 15-6 on the season with the win.
