Tioga – The Kenmare Honkers were able to hold off the Stanley Blue Jays for 71-67 to claim the District 16 Boys Basketball title.
The District 16 Championship game figured to a good one, and neither team disappointed. The atmosphere in the Tioga gym was electric and there wasn’t an empty seat in the house.
“It’s refreshing to see a group of kids battle so hard for each other,” said Stanley Blue Jays coach Kory Anderson.
The Blue Jays were able to claw to ahead for 39-37 halftime lead, but the Honkers would rally in the 3rd quarter to take a 7 point lead into the fourth quarter.
Kenmare would see their lead fall to just two points in the waning seconds. The Blue Jays had the ball and an opportunity to tie or take the lead with under 15 seconds left, but Stanley’s initial shot attempt would rattle out, as would the free throws that the Blue Jays received after an offensive rebound.
The inside game of the Blue Jays gave Kenmare fits all night long, as the trio of Kaedyn Hanson, Jath Mansfield and Ryan Neshiem terrorized the interior of the Honkers defense.
The Blue Jays interior game was matched by the Honkers perimeter game, Kenmare hit 8 3-pointers in the game. Hunter and Jacob Rodin combined for 37 points for the Honkers.
Sophomore Wyatt Hanson and Junior Logan Aadnes added 14 points and 13 points respectively for the Blue Jays.
The Stanley Blue Jays will face the New Town Eagles in the first round of the Region 8 Basketball Tournament.”We need to touch up a few things in key moments, but all in all we’re still playing and have as good of a chance as anybody.” said Anderson.
