Analysis

The top four teams will move on to the Region 8 tournament. One thing to remember is that the losers of the semifinal games will cross brackets (The loser of the top semifinal game will play the winner of the lower bracket consolation semifinals, and the loser of the lower semifinal game will play the winner of the top consolation semifinal)

There appears to be three tiers of teams entering the District 16 tournament, the top three teams (Kenmare, Ray, Powers Lake) haven’t surrendered a set to any of the bottom 4 teams this season. The next two teams (haven’t surrendered a set to either Tioga or Burke County, nor have they won a set against any of the top three teams (Kenmare, Ray, Powers Lake).

Due to this perceived lack of parity, the first round match-up between Stanley and Divide County will be pivotal for both teams and will determine the difficulty of the path to the region tournament.  Whichever team wins that first round game will have likely (barring a huge upset) a much easier path to the region 8 tournament with a likely matchup against #6 Tioga or #7 Burke County in the qualifying game. The loser of that first round match (Stanley vs. Divide County) will likely face #2 Ray or #3 Powers Lake for a berth in the region tournament, a match-up that appears daunting on paper.

It is important to remember that upsets are still very possible and any team has an opportunity to be a bracket buster. Should be a very exciting tournament to watch.
