The Stanley Blue Jay Girls Basketball team will feature plenty of fresh faces this season. The Blue Jays return just two starters from last year’s team that claimed a fourth consecutive District 16 Championship.
Leading the young Blue Jays this season will be senior Caitlyn Enger and junior Abby Iverson, both were key members for the Blue Jays last season.
Iverson lead the Blue Jays in scoring last season with 17.9 points per game, the talented junior is widely touted as the top player in the District and one of the top players in all of Region 8. Iverson is a very versatile player and will likely be utilized at multiple positions throughout the season, a task that the junior is up for. “If I am playing guard then I will be looking to distribute the ball around to my teammates, said Iverson. If I am playing post then I will try my best to get open to receive the ball and battle down low, whatever the team needs me to do.”
Enger was a very effective post for the Blue Jays last season, she has a high basketball IQ and routinely finds a way to score or rebound against much taller opponents. The senior will be relied upon early in the season to carry the water in the post for for Blue Jays. Enger knows that she will be also be responsible for helping the younger girls acclimated to varsity basketball, “Talking to our younger players about where they should be and how they should be doing certain things will be a big part of the transition process, communication will be key,” said Enger.
The Stanley Blue Jay coaching staff is very excited to have Enger and Iverson leading the way. “Caitlyn and Abby will be excellent leaders for this basketball team, said Stanley Blue Jay coach Kelly Roemmich. Both of them excell in the classroom, they are great role models for our younger players.”
Sophomores Hayley Schmidt, Danae Vachal, Hannah Sorenson and Sydney Larson saw minutes last season as freshman and all four will be back again for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays also have some height coming in with 8th grader Logan Lapica and the freshman trio of Jossi Meyer, Alyssa Ruden, and Mckenna Hanson.
Another player to watch out for this season is Taylor Dean, the freshman shows a lot of promise and will be pushing for minutes in Blue Jay backcourt this season.
Kaitlynn Lindberg will also be in the mix for the Blue Jays at the post position, the junior missed the last two season but is going to give Stanley another option down low.
Enger likes what she has seen so far from the newcomers, “They have so much potential and I’m really excited to see the progress that they can make over the course of the season.”
The Blue Jays will be facing some high hurdles this season in their quest to grab that 5th straight district crown, “We have some competitive teams that will challenge us for that top spot, said Enger. One of the biggest obstacles that we will need to overcome is how young our team is. We just don’t have many players with significant varsity experience.”
Enger is optimistic about the teams prospects, “I know by tourmament time we will be used to playing with eachother and we will be competing for the District title.”
Iverson also has high hopes for this years squad, but she knows that it will be a long climb. “Our expectation is to get better every game, we want to be improve every day, said Iverson. We want to get that 5th district championship, but we need to start with the little things.”
The Stanley Blue Jays open the season at home against Killdeer on November 29th at 7pm.
