Stanley Blue Jays Boys Basketball Preview: Unfinished Business

By Ian Grande

The Stanley Blue Jay Boys Basketball season is underway. The Blue Jays are coming off of a strong 16-7 season and the expectations for this year’s team are as high as they have been in quite a while.

Here is a look at your 2016-2017 Stanley Blue Jays:

Stanley will boast a deep group of guards this season. The talented group is headlined by Senior Logan Aadnes and Junior Wyatt Hanson. Hanson led the Blue Jays with almost 20 points per game last season, while Aadness handled a majority of the point guard duties last season.

Matt Patten got into the action last season and figures to be in the mix again this season along with senior Riley Iverson.

Sophomore Seth Hetzel has seen his game improve at an impressive clip in the last year. “Hetzel has improved his scoring skills a lot since last season and will push for a lot of playing time and possibly some starting time, said Stanley Blue Jay Head Coach Kory Anderson. He can be a huge asset vs a zone. Defensively he will need to be more consistent.”

Roderick Mcintosh will also be a player to watch coming up, the sophomore could be called upon to play both post and guard positions this season.

Junior Kaedyn Hanson figures to be one of the top posts in the region this season, Hanson is coming off a strong sophomore season in which he averaged over 12 points per game for the Blue Jays.

Senior Ryan Neshiem gave Stanley consistent minutes last season and has shown he can be a strong contributor on both ends of the floor.

Rayne Mcintosh will likely be called upon to give the Blue Jays depth inside.

Kenmare should be tough again this season, the Honkers figure to be the toughest match-up for the Blue Jays in District 16. The Honkers won the Region 8 Tournament last season, something the Blue Jays are hoping to do this season.

The Honkers and Blue Jays appear to be the favorites to take the District 16 title but Powers Lake figures to be in the mix as well. “Powers Lake will be up there, said Wyatt Hanson. They have a lot of experience and they return everyone from last year’s team.”

Region 8 action should be stimulating this season and the Blue Jay coaching staff isn’t taking anything for granted. “We’re not overlooking anyone in our district as we have some great coaches that create tough teams that compete very well, said Anderson. The region has a lot of interesting teams and there are tough teams that play with a tone of passion and there are some teams that can score a ton of points. We’ll have to toughen up by tournament time.”

Blue Jays

The Blue Jay players know that they will have some holes to fill but they are confident that they have the right personnel to do that.

“We will definitely miss the seniors from last year’s team, they all brought something special to the table for us. We will need some new guys to step in and fill those leadership roles, I’m confident that we have the right players to do that.” – Wyatt Hanson

Anderson has high hopes for his team but he recognizes that talent alone won’t be enough to get this group into the State Tournament. “I expect all of what the guys can give, said Anderson. We at times rely too much on our skill as we have a lot of skill as a team. We as coaches expect our players to realize that skill alone won’t get us where we want to be. We have practiced really hard and the kids haven’t been backing down from the competition in practice. We need our practice habits to carry over to every aspect of our games.”

This should be a very exciting season for the Stanley Blue Jays!
