North Dakota Class B Girls Basketball District 16 Preview

Ray – The District 16 Girls Basketball Tournament is set to tip off on Thursday (9th) in Ray.

Here is a preview of the North Dakota Class B District 16 Tournament and the complete bracket:

# 1 Powers Lake Ranchers (13-3)

#8 Bye

Notes: Powers Lake has only lost one game against District 16 competition this season (#3 Divide County). The Ranchers are led by Brianna Honrud, Grace Hove, and Sydney Titus.

-Honrud and Hove are both seniors and are looking to wrap up their stellar careers. Both players will be in the mix for District 16 Senior Athlete of the Year.

There is a potential matchup looming with Stanley in the semifinals. The Ranchers have won both meetings this season against the Blue Jays, a third matchup would be very intriguing.

#4 Stanley Blue Jays (8-11)

#5 Kenmare Honkers (7-11)

Notes: This figures to be the best matchup of the first round, the Blue Jays took home a hard fought 50-46 over the Honkers on January 16th (See article here).

Stanley’s Abby Iverson is coming off a 30 point performance against District 15 #3 seed Parshall. The junior has been ramping up the scoring as of late, she has 78 points in her last 3 games.

– Caitlyn Enger has quietly put together another strong season as the Blue Jays lone senior, she will be looking to lead the young Blue Jays to a pair of victories to extend her basketball career.

-The Blue Jays lost to #2 Ray and #3 Divide County by a combined 5 points this season.

# 2 Ray Jays (11-6)

#7 Tioga Pirates (1-18)

Notes: Ray won both meeting between the two teams this season (67-22 and 62-24).

-Ray’s Marissa Veach is having an excellent season and should find herself firmly in the conversation for District 16 Senior Athlete of the Year.

Tioga has shown they can hang with much more talented teams for stretches of games. A round one upset over Ray is unlikely, a win over Burke County in round two is certainly in the realm of possibility.

#3 Divide County (8-9)

#6 Burke County (4-14)

Notes: Divide County is the only District 16 team to beat Powers Lake this season. The Maroons have been streaky this season, losing 6 straight games in late December- early January, before ripping off a 4 game winning streak.

The Maroons are probably the most surprising team in the district this season, many people expected them to come in 5th place coming into the season.

Divide County won both meeting with Burke County this season (42-30 and 52-33), Burke County was up 18-16 at halftime of their first meeting.
