Ranchers claim District 16 Championship

Ray – The Powers Lake Ranchers held off a late charge from the Ray Jays to claim a 45-39 victory in the District 16 Championship Game.

The first half didn’t go as the Ray Jays had planned. District 16 Senior Athlete of the year Marissa Veach spent a majority of the half on the bench with 3 fouls, with Veach out of the game the Ranchers were able to build a 25-10 halftime lead.

Veach would return in the third quarter, helping the Ray Jays ramp up the defensive pressure in the second half. The Jays would cut the lead to just 5 points heading into the final quarter, setting up a thrilling finish.

The game would get as close as two points in the 4th quarter before Powers Lake senior Brianna Honrud hit a huge 3-pointer to get the momentum back in the final minutes of the game. Sydney Titus also added a few late baskets to help the Ranchers hold onto the lead. Honrud and Titus were both named to the All-District team and All-Tournament team.

Ray would have a few more chances to cut the lead down in the final minute but they couldn’t convert from 3-point range, allowing the Ranchers to secure the District 16 Championship.

The Ranchers move to 15-5 on the season and they will take on the Trenton Tigers in the first round of the Region 8 Tournament at 3pm on February 20th in Watford City.

The Jays will take on the Parshall Braves at 7pm on February 20th in Watford City, in the opening round of the Region 8 Tournament.
