North Dakota Class B Girls Region 8 Basketball Tournament Preview

Watford City – The North Dakota Class B Girls Region 8 Basketball Tournament will kick off on Monday, February 20th in Watford City.

Here is a full preview of what you can expect to see:

Game #1

#1 Powers Lake Ranchers

Vs. 2/20 3pm

#4 Trenton Tigers

Powers Lake

Record: 15-5

All-District Players: Brianna Honrud (sr.), Grace Hove (sr.), Sydney Titus (jr.)

How did they get here?  The Ranchers defeated the Ray Jays in the District 16 Championship 45-39.

The Ranchers will advance if? They can control the pace of the game and run their half-court offense. The Ranchers have a decided size advantage over the Tigers, they are also a much older team. The Ranchers will need to figure out a way to contend with the Tigers team speed, something that hurt them when the two teams met in January, the Tigers won that meeting 49-41.

Trenton

Record: 14-7

All-District Players: Alyssa St. Pierre (8th), Kaity Hove (fr.)

How did they get here? The Tigers beat North Shore/Plaza 58-14 in the Region 8 qualifying game.

The Tigers will advance if? If they can cause havoc in the Rancher’s backcourt. The Tigers are very young but they are quick and very well coached. Freshman Kaity Hove is the real deal and she will control the Tiger offense. The Tigers will be a tough out.

Game #2

#2 Watford City Wolves

Vs.  2/20 4:30pm

#3 Kenmare Honkers

Watford City

Record: 16-6

All-District Players: Avery Sundeen (jr.), Mackenzie Sparby (sr.), Emma Mogen (8th)

How did they get here? The Wolves lost to New Town 53-44 in the District 15 Championship.

The Wolves will advance if? The Wolves will have a decided advantage inside and out over the Honkers. Mackenzie Sparby was named Co-District 15 Senior Athlete and will give the Wolves a strong presence inside. Junior Avery Sundeen has been on fire from deep this year for the Wolves. The Wolves should cruise easily in this game.

Kenmare

Record: 9-12

All-District Players: Kenmare: Kathryn Handeland (sr.), Sierra Overton (jr.)

How did they get here? The Kenmare Honkers defeated the Burke County Titans 60-28 in the Region 8 qualifying game.

The Honkers will advance if? If they can somehow figure out how to deal with the pressure that the Wolves will put on them. The Honkers have also shown that they can get hot from deep at times, they will need to hit a bunch to keep up with the Wolves.

Game #3

#1 New Town Eagles

Vs. 2/20 6pm

#4 Stanley Blue Jays

New Town

Record: 19-3

All-District Players: Tamara Fox (jr.), Tyleigh Brady (so.), Marveen Ross (so.)

How did they get here?  The Eagles defeated Watford City 53-44 in the District 15 Championship.

The Eagles will advance if? The Eagles have the best backcourt in the Region and if they are on their game they can hang with anyone in the state. The Eagles were rarely at full strength during the regular season but they had a full squad for the District 15 Tournament and it spelt trouble for their opponents. Tyleigh Brady would receive my vote for most improved player in the Region. Brady was a nice young player as a freshman last season, but she has put herself firmly in the conversation for the distinction of “top player in Region 8”.

Stanley

Record: 9-12

All-District Players: Abby Iverson (jr.), Caitlyn Enger (sr.)

How did they get here? The Blue Jays beat Divide County 50-43 in the Region 8 qualifier.

The Blue Jays will advance if? The Blue Jays have one of the top players in Region 8 in Abby Iverson, they also have a solid and experienced post in senior Caitlyn Enger. The Blue Jays will need to figure out a way to contend with the half-court pressure that the Eagles will bring. This Blue Jays will have their work cut out for them against the talented Eagles.

Game #4

#2 Ray Jays

Vs. 2/20 7:30pm

#3 Parshall Braves

Ray

Record: 13-8

All-District: Kelsey Perdue (sr.), Mari Dolan (sr.), Marissa Veach (sr.)

How did they get here? The Jays lost 45-39 to the Powers Lake Ranchers in the District 16 Championship.

The Jays will advance if? The Jays handle the press as well as any team in District 16, this will come in handy if the Braves decide to ramp up the pressure. Senior Marissa Veach is a excellent all-around athlete. She was the District 16 Senior Athlete of the Year in both Basketball and Volleyball, she will need to be excellent if the Jay are going to avenge their 72-57 loss to the Braves.

Parshall

Record: 13-9

All-District: Parshall: Sidney Hall (jr.), Aulora Severance (sr.), Lexi Tveter (sr.)

How did they get here? The Braves beat Mandaree 71-50 in the Region 8 qualifying game.

The Braves will advance if? The Braves are a tough team to figure out. At times they look like a team that could make a run to the State tournament but at other times they look like a team that could get bounced out early. The Braves are deep at the guard position and they sport Co-District 15 Senior Athlete of the Year Aulora Severance inside. This team can make a run but they have a tough road and it starts with a scrappy Ray Jay team.
