Crosby – The Stanley Blue Jays and Kenmare Honkers have had their fair share of close games against each other the last couple of seasons.
The Honkers prevailed in the prior two meetings (2016 District Championship and 2017 regular season) by a combined 6 points. This would be another close one between the two teams, but the Blue Jays would find a way to outlast the Honkers in the end.
The key play of the game came with a little over ten seconds left in regulation. Wyatt Hanson stood at the free-throw line with the Blue Jays down 1 point, he would hit both and the Blue Jays held a 63-62 lead.
The Honkers would drive down and get a chance to get the go ahead basket but they couldn’t covert. Hanson would step back to the free-throw line and extend the lead to 64-62. A half-court shot from the Honkers Hunter Rodin at the buzzer would barely miss the mark and the Blue Jays celebration was on.
The game was played in front of a standing room only crowd with no seats left empty.
Hanson finished with a game high 31 points, Hunter Rodin scored a team high 27 points for the Honkers.
The championship game turned out to have even more significance because of what happened in the District 15 Tournament, with Watford City pulling a bit of a bracket buster.
