Lions edge Blue Jays in double overtime thriller

Article by Ian Grande

Minot – The Stanley Blue Jays and Bishop Ryan Lions made sure that the afternoon fans at the North Dakota Class B State Tournament got their monies worth.

The game got off to an incredibly slow start with only 38 combined points in the first half, with a majority of the excitement coming when Wyatt Hanson threw down two monstrous to get the fans on their feet.

The Lions held a lead for a majority of regulation, but the Blue Jays held them at arms length and finally took the lead themselves with a little over 3 minutes left. The rest of regulation was back in forth. Sophomore Seth Hetzel raced down a Lions player on a fast break and stole the ball with under a minute remaining, on the ensuing possession Wyatt Hanson scored a tear drop jumper to tie the game. Jacob Bohl responded for the Lions with a basket of his own to take a 49-47 lead. The Blue Jays would have one last chance to answer and senior Logan Aadnes came through, converting on a driving lay-up, sending the game to overtime–a very similar play to the one he scored on to vault the Blue Jays to victory in the opening round of the Region 8 Tournament.

Junior Matt Patten got things going for the Blue Jays by converting a 3 pointer a few seconds into the first overtime. Ben Bohl responded a minute later, the sophomore scored 2 quick baskets and came up with a key steal to put the Lions ahead 55-52. Wyatt Hanson would add a quick basket to cut the lead to just 1 point a few seconds later. The Blue Jays would get a key stop, giving Aadnes another opportunity to play hero once again. The senior would get fouled on the ensuing possession and convert one of two free-throws to tie the game. The Lions would miss their last second attempt, sending the game to a second overtime.

The second overtime was back and forth until the Jacob Bohl converted a basket to put the Lions ahead 64-60 with 17 seconds remaining. The Blue Jays would attempt a long 3-pointer but it wouldn’t fall. Eli Stewart added two last second free-throws for Bishop-Ryan to make the final score 66-60.

Wyatt Hanson poured in a game high 27 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Eli Stewart paced the Lions with 21 points. Jacob Bohl picked up a double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds.
