Meiers Minutes: Band is on the move, continues growth

Written by, Evan Meiers

As we wrap up the school year in the SHS Band Department we are faced with a myriad of feelings, thoughts, and contemplations about our future. We had an amazing year with successful performances in Minnesota and the Regional and State Music Festivals proved our department is making steps in the right direction. Someone commented that we have a school attached to the Stanley Public Music Conservatory! HA!

With that our department is still on the rise. With 70-80 students enrolled in just the high school band, we have outgrown our current space. The walls are just not spaced wide enough and without a building plan in place, we needed to get…creative.

Next year all BAND classes will be held in the HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY, the Library will move to the current Choir Room and the Choir Room will return to the current Band Room. While by no means is this fantastic solution, it tames the needs of our department…for now. I want to say that our school does not diminish the need of a library and reading as they will be moving to a smaller space. We have fantastic librarians who promote reading and reading comprehension, they have done a great job at keeping reading at the forefront of Stanley High School.  We have some soundproofing to do and a few other things to fix, but for now this will be the home for our BAND.

We had a successful visit with the 4th grade class about band next year, and it looks like a record number of students will be taking band in 5th grade. This creates a wonderful problem of finding instruments, and creating new ways to make a classroom of beginning band students succeed. We saw a lot of success in this years 5th & 6th grade classes….

Next year, our band classes will see some changes in the grading systems, and also logistics. As we continue to grow, we are going to be implementing something new for our students. We are going to be adding a BAND MUSIC BOOSTERS PARENT GROUP, which will need parental involvement. We will be looking for leadership opportunities for parents to directly help our department and our students.

In closing I would like to thank the community, school board, administration, parents, students, and all other supporters for a fantastic year! We are looking forward for next year, and will do our best to navigate through our departments’ growth.  Both in numbers and musically, we are growing and moving on ward and upward to a future of greatness.

**Side Note – We will not be marching in the 4th of July Parade, Mr. Meiers will be taking students to Europe and he will be leaving on the 4th of July. Thank you for your understanding.
