Blue Jays roll past Honkers

Stanley – The Stanley Blue Jay band was rockin in stands while the Stanley football team was making an impressive statement on the field by knocking off the Kenmare Honkers 29-6.

The game featured two of the top all-around athletes in the region; Stanley’s Wyatt Hanson and Kenmare’s Jacob Rodin. Neither player disappointed tonight.

Mike Gunderson didn’t disappoint either, the Stanley senior added three more touchdowns tonight. The speedy back has been dual threat for the Blue Jays this season and he flashed both his running and receiving skills again tonight.

Gunderson opened up the scoring late in the first quarter and the Blue Jays would hold onto that lead until Garrett Strokeland found Jacob Rodin for a long touchdown.

Rodin came up with an interception on the next possession late in Honkers territory, but Blue Jay senior Cody Ruden tackled the Honker tailback in the end-zone for a safety to put Stanley up 8-6.

The Blue Jays turned their next possession into a touchdown when Hanson found junior Seth Hetzel for a nice touchdown catch right before halftime to go up 15-6.

This is certainly going to be a duo to watch for the rest of the season if you are a Blue Jay fan. Hetzel and Hanson seem to be finding a groove the last couple of games and that will present some serious matchup problems for opposing teams with the 6’3” Hetzel on the perimeter.

The score would stay 15-6 until Wyatt Hanson connected on a long pass to Gunderson for a touchdown with 10:38 left in the 4th quarter. Gunderson would add another rushing touchdown late to seal the game.
