Kenmare- The Stanley Blue Jays came out firing in early and often in their first round victory over the Ray Jays en route to a convincing 3-0 victory.
The Blue Jays turned in two of their best sets of the year to start the match.
The powerful hitting from sophomore Jossi Meyer and junior Hayley Schmidt was too much for the Ray defense to handle early on.
Schmidt and Meyer routinely tee’d off on spikes early on, allowing the Blue Jays to cruise through the first set easily. The Blue Jays were dominant in the second set as well. Fittingly enough Schmidt was able to put an exclamation point on a strong second set with a devastating kill to seal the 25-11 victory.
The third set would prove to be the most exciting of the night. The Ray Jays jumped out to an early 13-8 lead before sophomore Alyssa Ruden led the Blue Jays back on the heels of 4 straight aces.
The game would remain tight the rest of the way. With the game deadlocked at 20, Schmidt ripped a couple of aces of her own to put the Blue Jays up 22-20.
Meyer would slam home a kill a few moments later to put the Blue Jays up 24-21.
The Ray Jays weren’t ready to go home though and they were able to tie it up 24-24.
Meyer would pick an excellent time to record her 13th kill of the game, putting the Blue Jays ahead 25-24. Senior Jasmyne Giese put the finishing touches on the game with an ace on the very next play.
Stanley will face the #1 seed Kenmare Honkers in the semifinals tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m.
