Stanley Blue Jays Boys Basketball Preview

Expectations are sky high for the Stanley Blue Jays Basketball team after reaching the State Tournament last year for the first time in 79 years.

Here is a breakdown of this year’s team, as well as a look at the rest of District 16:

Coaches: Kory Anderson (Head Coach), Gary Schell, Shane Aadnes, and Brady Aadnes

Whose Gone? Logan Aadnes (All-Region, All-District), Riley Iverson, Ryan Nesheim

Returning players: Seniors Wyatt Hanson (Minnesota State-Moorhead) and Kaedyn Hanson (South Dakota School of the Mines) have both inked their college commitments, the duo will be spending a lot of time above the rim this season (See video below)… Matt Patten (sr.) was featured primarily as a three-point shooter last season, his all-around game has come a long way, he will be a player to watch this season… Seth Hetzel was the 6th man last season, he has good length and can sling it from deep… Roderick Mcintosh (jr.) saw some varsity minutes last year, he will give the Blue Jays depth inside… Rhett Hanson (so.) missed last season with an injury, he has the frame to make a significant impact… Rayne Mcintosh (sr.) saw some time last season as a junior, the Blue Jays are hoping that he can give them some depth inside… Mike Gunderson (sr.) is a high energy guard, he will give the Blue Jays some juice defensively… Quayde Lee (sr.) saw some minutes last season, he will provide the Blue Jays with guard depth… Ty Gorder, Steffen Dauwalder, and Chance Beiri are newcomers this season.

District 16 Outlook

Stanley Blue Jays: The Blue Jays are considered one of the top teams in the state this season (see article). The Hanson cousins are a known commodity throughout the state and they will excel this season. The play of sharp shooters Matt Patten and Seth Hetzel will likely have a lot to do with how deep this team can go, most people are guessing that will be pretty far.

Burke County Titans: The Titans bring back a pair of all-district performers from last season (Josh Kihle (sr.) and Matthew Hinds (sr.). Kihle and Hinds are tough inside, this team will be interesting to watch this season.

Powers Lake: The Ranchers lose all-district performer Logan Klitzke but retain all-district performers Kyle Van Berkom (so.) and Aiden Nordloef (so.). This team will play a strong fundamental brand of disciplined basketball, count the Ranchers out at your own peril.

Kenmare Honkers: Last year’s District 16 Senior Athlete of the Year Hunter Rodin has graduated, leaving his talented brother Jacob to take the reins for the Kenmare Honkers. Rodin will be one of the top players in the region this season, but the team will need to plug some holes if they are going to make it back to the Region 8 title game.

Ray Jays: Garrett Hodenfield (sr.) was an all-district performer for the Ray Jays last season, they will be battling it out for a Region 8 tournament berth.

Tioga Pirates: The Pirates will open their season against the Stanley Blue Jays in the Lions Tournament.
