Stanley – The game between the Stanley Blue Jays and the New Town Eagles figured to be a fast-paced game. It lived up to its billing, with both teams routinely pushing the pace and providing the fans with an excellent experience.
The Blue Jays would ultimately escape with a 83-73 victory, but it would be interesting along the way.
Stanley was able to push the lead to 15+ points multiple times throughout the game, only to see the Eagles claw the lead back to single digits. The Blue Jays flashed their offensive prowess early and often, led by South Dakota School of the Mines commit Kaedyn Hanson who finished with a game high 30 points.
The Blue Jays seemed to have a strong hold on the game in the first half before three starters found themselves in foul trouble late in the first half. New Town was able to take advantage, cutting the Blue Jay lead from 16 points to 4 points at halftime.
Stanley regrouped in the third quarter and pushed the lead back up to 15 points. New Town would rally back once again, forcing the Blue Jays to earn the victory at the free-throw line. Matt Patten and Seth Hetzel combined for 6 made free-throws in the final two minutes, helping the Blue Jays maintain a comfortable cushion.
Senior Wyatt Hanson showed once again that he is far from a one-dimensional player. The flashy senior had a handful of highlight reel caliber assists, leading to open baskets for teammates. Hanson finished with 14 points and 10 assists.
Hetzel added 17 points for Stanley, while junior Roderick McIntosh chipped in 8 points (4-4 FG). Rhett Hanson also had a solid game for the Blue Jays, the sophomore was on the receiving end of a fourth-quarter tic-tac-toe pass from his brother Wyatt and cousin Kaedyn.
The big story of the game was the inside play of Kaedyn Hanson, the standout senior was 14-15 from the field. He is a mindboggling 25-26 (96%) from the field in the last two games, completely dominating the paint in both games.
The Blue Jays will have a little bit of break before they travel to Minot to take on #8 Shiloh Christian on January 27th.
